At Comic-Con San Diego the executive producers of The Vampire Diaries revealed some tips on what to expect in the upcoming fifth season.
The show stars Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert, the small town girl swept off her feet by a pair of vampire brothers. The brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), battle over the girl’s affections while trying to save the town from various evil doers.
Executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries said the new season will also deal with the ramifications of Nina Dobrev’s Elena choosing romance with Damon over Stefan, as well as Katherine, the ancient vampire also played by Dobrev, involuntarily becoming human.
Before The Vampire Diaries had their panel at Comic-Con, the producers showed a clip from the new season showing the current Big Bad, Silas, addressing a group of Mystic Falls townsfolk while appearing as Stefan. He plainly informed the crowd that he wants to control them.
“It is Mystic Falls and essentially you can’t be that happy for that long, so there’s always got to be that drama,” said Somerhalder.
Season 5 will also see some characters going off to college.
“Why are we pursuing higher education?” joked Wesley. “We’re all murderers.”
The Vampire Diaries returns to CW October 10.
