Visual Effects Supervisor and new director, Dan Deleeuw (Night at the Museum), received the role of his lifetime; directing the second episode of season two of Loki. According to Variety, Deleeuw worked on season one of Loki, overseeing visual effects. Executive producer Kevin Wright (Doctor Strange) informed Deleeuw he was brought on as director because, even when he worked on visual effects, he was consistently talking about the story.
Deleeuw worked in visual effects on Night at the Museum, Armageddon, and The Mask. He eventually moved to second unit directing on Marvel projects, including Eternals and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantunmania. In episode two, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston (Kong: Skull Island), and his counterpart and friend at the TVA, Mobius, played by Owen Wilson (Marley & Me), go after TVA trooper that went rogue, Brad Wolfe, also known as X-5, played by Rafael Casal (Bad Education). Loki and Mobius travel to 1977 London to find Wolfe who is living as a movie star and loved by everyone. After an on-foot chase, Wolfe is captured and brought back to the TVA to be interrogated by Loki and Mobius about Sylvie’s whereabouts. Sylvie, played by Sophia Di Martino (Yesterday), ends up in 1980s Oklahoma working at a McDonalds. After her life was taken from her as a child by the TVA, Sylvie decides to stay there to live a normal life unlike the one she used to have. Loki, Mobius, and Wolfe show up at the McDonald’s and Loki tries to get her to leave her new home before everyone in that timeline dies.
When asked about if he always had an ambition to direct in addition to visual effects, according to Variety, Deleeuw responded saying, growing up he made small films and did have an interest in directing, even when in his visual effects roles, and finally had the opportunity when working with the Russo brothers (Avengers: Infinity War), who encouraged him towards directing.
