This holiday its going to be all pineapples and blueberries (well, The Bluberry), because Psych is coming back to USA for a two-hour holiday special.
Deadline reports that the special, titled Psych: The Movie, is going into production next week in order to hit a December premiere date. The special was written by Psych creator Steve Franks along with star James Roday. Roday will also direct the special.
Psych: The Movie will see the return of the entire core cast including Shawn Spencer (Roday), Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill), Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), Shawn’s father Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), and Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson). The movie will pick up three years after the series finale, and will see the Psych team reuniting for the holidays to investigate a mystery assailant targeting one of their own. The special will also feature fan-favorite characters, though probably no hope of seeing Jimmi Simpson’s Mary Lightly after his return in “Psych: The Musical” (and especially considering he is now off in Westworld). More likely are characters like Sage Brocklebank’s absolutely lovable Buzz McNab, Kurt Fuller’s Woody the Coroner, and just maybe Cary Elwes sly Pierre Despereaux. The greatest long-shot would be if Psych is able to complete its Breakfast Club collection and finally snag Emilio Estevez for a guest spot.
“Psych is a beloved part of our USA family, and what better time to reunite with family than the holidays?” said NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment President Chris McCumber. “Steve and James have taken the unique brand of comedy that the series honed over eight seasons and packed it into a two-hour movie that successfully rekindles one of the greatest bromances in television history.”
“Psych has an absolutely phenomenal and constantly refreshing fan base,” said UCP President Jeff Wachtel. “Steve, James, Dulé and the rest of the gang are all returning for a delightful holiday movie that will not — nay, dare not — disappoint!”
Psych aired on USA for eight seasons from 2006-2014 and is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Psych: The Movie comes from UCP and Tagline Pictures, and is executive produced by Franks, Roday, Hill, Chirs Henze and Kelly Kulchak.
