Back in March TVLine reported that MTV’s Scream would return for third season, but that the series would be rebooted with an entirely new cast and showrunner. While the new reboot of the series that is also a reboot of the Scream horror film franchise will reportedly reference story lines and characters from the past two seasons, Season 3 of Scream is expected to tell its own story. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Tyga and C.J. Wallace are the first actors to be cast in the upcoming third season, which will feature six episodes.
Tyga is best known for his work as a rapper, but has appeared in films such as Dope, Barbershop: The Next Cut, and Going Under. His personal life has been a popular topic in the tabloids ever since his engagement to Blac Chyna and then his on-and-off-again relationship with Kylie Jenner. C.J. Wallace is also an American rapper. He has appeared in films such as Notorious, Everything Must Go, and Kicks. Wallace is the son of the late The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans. Scream will be both of the actors first roles as a series regular.
Season 3 of Scream will follow Deion Elliot, a local high school star running back with a troubled past that will presumably come back to haunt him and his friends. With a bright future planned for Deion, the killer in the series will likely do whatever it takes to keep Deion from success.
Tyga is set to play Jamal, the step-brother of Deion. Jamal is associated with a tough crowd, but has a big heart and is incredibly loyal to his step-brother.
Wallace will play Amir. The character has strict parents and is expected to be a model high school student. While socially awkward, Amir aspires to be a musician instead working for his family business like he is expected to do. When he eventually becomes a target of this season’s killer, Amir will have to reevaluate who he is and what he wants for his life.
Brett Matthews, who has previously worked on The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, will serve as the showrunner for the upcoming season. He will be joined by Queen Latifah, Shakim Conpere and Yaneley Arty for Flavor Unit Entertainment as executive producers.
With a new cast and story line, the third season of Scream will also have a new format. Instead of airing 10 to 14 episodes on a weekly basis, the new season will air all six of the upcoming episodes over a three day period. The new format will cater to the binge-watching format that has become popular among the teen demographic in recent years. Scream is set to return to MTV in March.
