Sarah J. Mass’s (author, The Assasin’s Blade) bestselling fantasy series A Court of Thorns and Roses, is currently in the works to be adapted into a television series at Hulu, according to Deadline. The project has received a script commitment with a measurable penalty attached.
At the helm of the project is Ron Moore (creator, For All Mankind), who has had previous success adapting popular book series into television series. Moore has served as an executive producer on Outlander since 2014, helping the series to become success for Starz, via Deadline.
Moore and Maas will both serve as writers and executive producers on the series. According to Deadline, the series is based loosely on Beauty and the Beast, combining romance, danger, and political turmoil. Based on Maas’ book, the series will follow a huntress who travels into a magical realm in order to secure her family’s safety. Along the journey, she falls in love with a faerie lord, and their romance becomes an opportunity to save each of their worlds under the threat of an ancient curse.
The series will be produced by 20th Television, where, according to Deadline, Maas has an overall deal. Maas announced her excitement over the upcoming adaptation with an Instagram post.
Like Maas, Moore is also under an overall deal with 20th Television, and A Court of Thorns and Roses is the latest of his highly anticipated projects. Moore is currently working on adapting The Society of Explorers and Adventurers to create a Magic Kingdom Universe series for Disney+. Via Deadline, Moore is also attached to a Swiss Family Robinson reboot which is also intended to premiere on Disney+. In addition to his projects currently in development, Moore serves as an executive producer on both Outlander and For All Mankind.
A Court of Thorns and Roses is set to follow the popularity of other fantasy series on a variety of streaming platforms. According to Deadline, Netflix’s The Witcher has been immensely popular since its release in 2019. Most notably, Game of Thrones continues to be successful franchise for HBO, as multiple prequels and spin-off series are currently in development.
