‘True Blood’ Is Becoming A Musical

It looks like vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings are about to burst into song.

The New York Post reports that HBO is developing a Broadway musical based on True Blood, and that an early workshop of the musical was conducted in New York. Pam MacKinnon (China Doll, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) is directing a cast that includes Ellen Foley, Claybourne Elder and Ann Harada. Original True Blood composer Nathan Barr (The Americans, Hemlock Grove) is writing the music, with the lyrics and play itself being handled by Elizabeth Scott (Heartbeat, Living Dead Girl). The NYP also notes that True Blood creator Alan Ball (Banshee, Six Feet Under) is involved with the musical in some capacity, though in more of a hands-off role.

The True Blood musical takes many cues from the show it is based on. It is set in Bon Temps, Louisiana and will incorporate all of the vampires, witches, fairies and other creatures fans of the TV show are accustomed to.

E! Online first broke the news of a True Blood musical back in 2014, but at that time could only confirm that the musical was in preliminary discussions. At that time in the musical’s very early stages, composer Barr said, “We’ve got a couple of songs already. The story lends itself to a musical. The challenge for us is the minute I thought about True Blood: The Musical, I myself could kind of groan. I can see the bad version of that. It’s really a matter of finding a way of sort of reinventing it.”

There is no telling just yet when the musical will premiere, or if it will even go forward as a full production, but hopefully True Blood fans won’t have to wait too much longer to find out if they can hear the likes of Sookie and Bill belt out some songs on Broadway.
