‘Titans’ Casts Savannah Welch as Barbara Gordon for Season Three

It has been reported that Savannah Welch (Kim, The Transcendents) has been cast as Barbara Gordon for season three of HBO Max’s original series Titans, according to Variety. There are several iterations of Barbara Gordon in the comics but according to Variety’s exclusive scoop this version will feature Barbara after she is shot by The Joker, alluding to the famous Killing Joke comic that released in the 1988. “In Season 3, Gordon is Gotham City Police Commissioner. Uses wheelchair. She used to be Batgirl until she was shot and paralyzed by the Joker,” as reported by Variety.

Barbara Gordon, otherwise known as Batgirl, was introduced in DC comics in January of 1967, written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Carmine Infantino. Barbara is the daughter of the famous Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordan. As a crimefighter she is a skilled combatant and a cunning tactician, however after The Joker surprises her at her apartment and shoots her through the spine, she employs her intelligence as a guardian angel for Batman’s team known as Oracle. Using live video and audio feed from their missions, Oracle provides possible escape routes, intel, and updates for Batman and his team.

Barbara will provide a compelling narrative for Titans fans and with her being constrained to a wheelchair, she will most likely act as their eyes and ears as her famous alias Oracle. With all of Batman’s training and Jim Gordan’s sense of justice, fans will be excited to see if Titans explores flashbacks in Barbara’s history. Viewers have seen sneak peeks of Joker and Batman in the end of season one, but Titans has yet to reveal what their version of Joker and Batman look like in full view. With the introduction of Barbara Gordon, possibilities are boundless as her rich backstory could feature key characters in the DC universe.
