Tina Fey Pilot ‘The Kicker’ Casts J.B. Smoove

J.B. Smoove has joined the cast of The Kicker, a new CBS comedy about an oddball athlete who drives friends, family and strangers bonkers after he publishes a controversial book and finds himself cut from his pro football team.

Smoove joins Geoff Stults (October Road, 7th Heaven) and David Spade in the comedy pilot from sitcom dream team Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and writer Jack Burditt. The trio all worked on 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Burditt has written for other popular series like Fraiser and Just Shoot Me.

Variety reports that Fey and Carlock are also developing a pilot for a mother-daughter comedy for NBC along with Tracey Wigfield, another 30 Rock staffer. Though Fey has been busy with films, starring in the recently released Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and last winter’s Sisters, she and Carlock have also guided three new comedy pitches through development cycle of the past two years.

Though Smoove has never caught on as a headlining actor he is a star of stand-up comedy and has enjoyed a steady and successful career on strong shows like The MillersEverybody Hates Chris and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He also served as a writer on Saturday Night Live from 2003-2006, during Fey’s term as the show’s head writer, and won a Writers Guild of America award for Best Comedy series for an episode he guest wrote in 2007.

Watch J.B. and Seth Meyers reminisces on some of the comedian’s rejected pitches:

He later had a small part in Date Night, the comedy film starring Fey and Steve Carrell.

Most recently Smoove guest starred on Life in Pieces and Fresh off the Boat while Spade appeared as General Custer in the Netflix film The Ridiculous 6 and Griffin in Hotel Transylvania 2. Stults had a recurring part on Zoo, a CBS adaptation of a James Patterson novel, and the Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie.

With Stults as the dejected athlete Daryl Thorkelsonan Smoove will play Gil, his loyal employee and Spade will play Russ Thorkesonan, brother and manager to Daryl.
