‘The Office’ Creator Greg Daniels Discusses Hypothetical Reboot Of Series: “I Don’t Know If That Would Be Something People Would Want Or Not”

Greg Daniels (Parks & Recreation), the creator of the former hit NBC comedy series The Office, commented on what direction a hypothetical reboot for one of the most popular comedy series of the 21st century would take in a new interview with Collider. Daniels has an idea, but isn’t sure what the reaction would be.

“I can’t tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters,” Daniels said. “I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars. But I don’t know if that would be something people would want or not, it’s hard to tell.”

Daniels continued to discuss his pessimism for a well-received fan reaction to a potential reboot or spinoff series, citing the initial fan reaction to season one of The Office, which was originally a comedy series in Britain.

“A lot of people were very down on it because they were like, ‘It’ll never be as good as the English show.’ And then it took a while, but we sort of turned that boat around,” Daniels explained, per Collider.

Daniels also commented on whether he and NBC have mutual interest in any sort of comeback for the show.

“Well, they certainly would be very excited to do it,” Daniels told Collider. “Obviously certain parts are just personal, like I’ve got all these other projects that I’ve been working on and [The Office] was such a wonderful and rare experience that obviously you don’t want to just go back to it and kind of possibly disappoint people when right now, they couldn’t be happier about it.”

Daniels’ American version of The Office, which starred the likes of Steve Carrell (Get Smart), Rainn Wilson (The Rocker), John Krasinski (A Quiet Place), and Jenna Fischer (Blades Of Glory), first aired on NBC in 2005 and lasted nine seasons until ultimately ending in 2013. Since then, all nine seasons of the comedy had been streaming on Netflix, before switching over to NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, in 2021.

The show had received 42 Emmy nominations through its eight-year run, winning five, including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006.
