‘The Magicians’ Renewed for Season 3 on Syfy

No, these young magicians will not be doing a ‘disappearing act’. With the final episode of season 2 set to air next week, Syfy has made sure that this season will not be The Magicians last. According to Deadline, Syfy has order 13 more episodes of the supernatural fantasy series, which is set to premiere in 2018.

Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling trilogy of novels, The Magicians tells the story of Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) and his friends, who are recruited to a secret academy for magic called Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. Concurrently, Quentin’s childhood friend Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve) is denied entry to the school, and has to seek lessons in magic elsewhere. The series has followed them as they learn of the world, as well as the art of magic. When first released, the series received some criticism by fans of the books for changing various elements from its adaptation from book to screen, such as increasing the age of the characters from teens to 20s, and introducing characters much earlier than in the original novels. But as the series has gone one, it has come to be beloved by both old fans of the books, as well as new fans. Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy and Jade Tailor also star.

The series, which premiered in September 2015, is produced by Universal Cable Productions, McNamara Moving Company, Man Sewing Dinosaur, and Groundswell Productions. Michael London,Janice Williams, John McNamara, and Sera Gamble serve as executive producers for the series (with the later two being the creators of the series, and co-showrunners). London originally acquired the literary property for Fox, but when Fox didn’t want to go through with producing the pilot, NBCUniversal’s Syfy acquired the rights.

The Magicians joins Syfy’s list of renewed series, after announcing last month that they were renewing The Expanse for a third season and 12 Monkeys for a fourth and final season.

You can find the first two seasons of The Magicians on Syfy, while the first season is also available to stream on Netflix.
