The CW Renews Entire Lineup in Unprecedented Move

The CW has renewed all of its first year series, as well as its long-running show The 100, for its new season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new series, All American, In the Dark and Roswell, New Mexico, were the last of a set of renewed shows after the 10 renewals that were announced back in January, bringing the total up to 14 from The CWs 12 shows last year. This is also the first time that the company has given second seasons to all of its new series. Only three of the shows that had planned endings, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, iZombie and Jane the Virgin, will not continue into the next season, making The CW’s renewals of all shows historic.

The last time all shows were renewed without any cancellations was back in the 1980s when Fox had just become the fourth broadcast network. During this time ABC, CBS and NBC were the main sources of primetime, with only 20% of American households having cable.

According to Mark Pedowitz, President of The CW, “As we begin to plan for the 2019-2020 season, we’re thrilled to have this roster of 14 exceptionally creative and distinctive series, including all five first year shows, as the foundation on which to continue to build the multiplatform future of The CW. One of our key long-term goals has been to continually add more original programming all year round, especially in midseason and summer, and with these returning shows and the new series we’ll order as we get closer to the May upfront, next season on The CW is shaping up to be our most robust year-round schedule yet.”

With all of the changes coming to television, it is possible that The CW’s move to grow its lineup is an attempt to keep on air despite the push for streaming services by many of its competitors.

Coincidentally, The CW’s 2018 summer shows will also return this year.

Here is a complete list of the 2019-2020 lineup: All American; Charmed; In The Dark; Legacies; Roswell, New Mexico; Arrow; Black Lightning; DC’S Legends Of Tomorrow; Dynasty; The Flash; Riverdale; Supergirl; Supernatural; and The 100.
