‘The Chi’ Renewed for a Season Five at Showtime

Patience is a virtue, but fans of the Showtime drama series The Chi didn’t have to wait long after the riveting season four finale last night to find out that there’s more on the way. Less than twenty-four hours after the finale’s airing, Showtime announced on Monday that the series will be returning for a fifth season, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter

Created and co-written by Emmy-Award winner Lena Waithe (Master of None, Them), the Windy City is sticking around as the series continues to pull in millions of viewers each week. Born and raised in Chicago, Waithe attended Columbia College Chicago and has since returned to her roots by helming the hit series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Chi averages 4.2 million viewers per week across all platforms, and is quickly on the rise to become the most watched television program on cable. Season four aired total of ten episodes and can be streamed in its entirety on Showtime. Season five will debut sometime in 2022.

The Chi is a coming-of-age story taking place on the south side of Chicago as it follows various residents who become linked to one another through exceptional circumstances and stay bonded with each other in the hopes for a better tomorrow. Jacob Latimore (The Maze Runner) stars alongside Michael Epps (Chicago Fire), Birgundi Baker (Black Lightning), Yolanda Ross (How to Get Away With Murder), Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Luke James (Genius: Aretha), Curtiss Cook (House of Cards), and Shamon Brown Jr..

In addition to creating and writing the series, Waithe co-executive produced season four of The Chi alongside Common (Hell on Wheels), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Aaron Kaplan (A Million Little Things), Derek Dudley (Meet the Blacks), Shelby Stone (Single Ladies), Rishi Rajani (Twenties), and Justin Hillian (I’m Dying Up Here). Hillian also serves as the series showrunner. The Chi is shot in its entirety on location in Chicago, and is produced by 20th Television.
