According to Deadline, the new opening credits for Marvel’s Secret Invasion, which was generated by AI, are now receiving backlash from the audience. The series, which just recently premiered, is causing massive commotion on social media in ways the company did not expect. After the debut of the first episode, director Ali Selim (Sweet Land) confirmed to Polygon that the opening credits were generated by artificial intelligence. Selim stated that he believed the idea of using AI for the opening credits of the series fit into the theme of the show.
Although he doesn’t quite understand how artificial intelligence works, Selim said, “When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?’’
He continued, “We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change.”
According to Deadline, the use of AI has created backlash on social media given that it is known for eliminating the need for graphic designers as well as animators that could have crafted the opening credit. The timing of the argument couldn’t be better since the WGA is currently on strike after failed negotiations which included the protection of writers against the use of AI in the writing process.
Secret Invasion follows Nick Fury as he learns about a secret invasion of Earth by the Skrulls who have infiltrated high positions in the government. The series cast includes Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Ben Mendelsohn (Ready Player One), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Cobie Smulders (The Avengers), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Martin Freeman (Black Panther), Don Cheadle (Crash), and many others.
Secret Invasion is available to stream on Disney+. The series will air a new episode every Wednesday. All six episodes of the series will be an hour long.
