Ted Danson Discusses His Career Success Following ‘The Good Place’

When The Good Place premiered on NBC in 2016, it was an instant hit. Three seasons in, the comedy series boasts an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Seasons 2 and 3 both have earned 100% scores from the popular review and ratings website. With this success in mind, Ted Danson sat down with The Hollywood Reporter this week to discuss his role and what it has impacted the way he thinks about his career.

Danson currently stars as Michael on Mike Schur’s comedy. He shares the screen with cast members Kristen Bell (Eleanor), William Jackson Harper (Chidi), Jameela Jamil (Tahani), and Manny Jacinto (Jason), and over the course of three seasons he has won the hearts of the show’s many audience members. This might be thanks, in part, to his acting process, which he discussed at the Hollywood Reporter’s Comedy Actor Roundtable.

“Nowadays, I try the words out, over and over and over again, and slowly, if the words are really well written words, which I’ve been blessed with, the words start to inform me. It becomes a dance,” Danson explained in the interview.

This was followed by some career advice for younger actors. Danson, who has enjoyed roles on hits like Cheers in addition to The Good Place, had this to say about being a celebrated actor in wake of his work on the television hits: “Relax and enjoy it. This is an amazing ride.”

When asked about celebrating his own career amidst success and critical praise, Danson continued, “I think it’s a balancing act, because if you celebrate your career in the moment, then it feels like you’re slowing down.” The actor added, “You’re always looking: ‘What’s next? What can I do better? One of these days, literally, I’m gonna be good,’ that kind of thinking, as opposed to celebrating.”

Danson has been nominated for a total of fourteen Emmy awards and eight Golden Globe awards. On top of these nominations, he has earned two Emmys and three Golden Globes for his work on Cheers.

The full interview will air on Sunday, June 30, on SundanceTV.
