Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift (Miss Americana) is firing back at Netflix’s new show Ginny & Georgia after being the center of a joke in the show regarding her past relationships. Describing the joke as “deeply sexist,” Swift released statement on Twitter calling out the series and Netflix for using her love life as as a punchline, via Indiewire.
Recently released on February 24, Ginny & Georgia tells the story of wild and carefree single mother Georgia raising her two children, fifteen-year-old Ginny and nine-year old Austin in a small town. Compared to Gilmore Girls for its mother-daughter relationship and endless pop culture references, one such reference regarding Swift has now come under the spotlight in a negative way. The written line of dialogue, picked up by Indiewire, is: “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift.”
Fans of the singer immediately came to her aide, with the hashtag “#RESPECT TAYLOR SWIFT” now trending on Twitter. Swift has long been ridiculed and at the center of crazed paparazzi when it comes to her past relationships, particularly when she was young and still a teenager. In recent years, she’s become more vocal about the treatment of women in the music industry and the various double standards that are still in place.
Issuing a statement on twitter Monday morning, Swift wrote, “Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY.”
Swift went on to further condemn Netflix for letting the joke slide in correlation to her 2020 critically acclaimed Netflix documentary Miss America. She noted the irony that the insult came from the same platform that also is home to her film that centers on sexism within the entertainment industry, writing, “Also @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you. Happy Women’s month I guess.”
