SyFy is Developing a ‘Krypton’ Spinoff with the Villain Lobo

Season two of Krypton may have just begun, but fans of the SyFy show can get excited for a new character that is getting his own spin-off show. SyFy and Warner Horizon Scripted Television have confirmed they are in the midst of developing Lobo (working title). Krypton is Superman prequel series currently airing its second season on SyFy. Season two introduced a few new villains, including Lobo. Lobo is a popular DC comic book character who made his first comic book appearance in 1983. Lobo is an indestructible galactic bounty hunter with a massive body count. Similar to the beloved Marvel character Deadpool, Lobo is violent, sarcastic with ample amounts of profanity, and has a habit of breaking the fourth wall.

There have been numerous attempts to adapt Lobo into a live action film or television show. Some creatives who expressed interest in this character include Michael Bay, Guy Richie, Dwayne Johnson, and Will Smith. However, the character was unable to make the transition until the second season of Krypton. Cameron Welsh is the executive producer of Krypton and he was excited for Lobo to be introduced, “…In season 2, we really wanted to expand the world, and we think that it was through DC and [DC Entertainment’s VP of creative affairs] Dan Evans, who said, ‘You know, you’ve got Lobo to use.’ We thought, ‘Let’s go there’… He’s such a fun character. In some ways, he’s such a broad character. He seems almost antithetical to the sort of more grounded nature of our show, but that’s kind of what made it exciting and interesting to throw him in there, because he’s so at odds tonally with a lot of what the show is about, which created an interesting dynamic with the characters.”

Emmett J. Scanlan plays Lobo in Krypton and a deal is in place for him to star in the spin-off series. Cameron Welsh will be the executive producer/writer.
