NBC’s Superstore has officially closed its doors to future endeavors, announcing that its planned spinoff series Bo & Cheyenne will not be moving forward, according to Variety. The series was slated to follow Johnny Pemberton (Ant-Man) and Nichole Sakura’s (Shameless) characters balancing “their big dreams with the harsh realities of being blue-collar family in America,” via Variety.
Superstore, following a group of employees at a supersized megastore called Cloud 9, centered around the dysfunctional realities of working at a store, which attracts some oddball customers. The show launched six total seasons before its cancellation in December 2020. The finale was aired on March 25, with plans of continuing the series through characters Bo and Cheyenne, the latter of which was a series regular for all six seasons. Pemberton as Bo recurred as Cheyenne’s boyfriend, husband, and eventually, father to their child, Harmonica.
Of her character’s development throughout the show, starting as a younger cast member, Sakura stated, “I’ve always wanted her to be a strong woman. She started out as a 17-year-old pregnant teenager and it honestly feels like my own journey going through the seasons of the show – starting out as a younger cast member, and finding my place and finding my own strength, and really just sinking into that and feeling into it,” via Variety.
Star America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) returned to the show for its two-part finale following her leave after the show’s 100th episode. The spinoff would have been executive produced by Superstore‘s Justin Spitzer (The Office) alongside Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and David Bernard.
