‘Superstore’ Spin-Off ‘Bo & Cheyenne’ in Development at NBC

A consolation prize for Superstore fans mourning the loss of America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants) and the news of cancellation has been offered in the form of proposed spin-off Bo & Cheyenne. The series will star Nichole Sakura (Superstore, Shameless) and Johnny Pemberton (21 Jump Street, Son of Zorn), with the ordered pilot episode written by Bridget Kyle (Superstore, The Grinder) and Vicky Luu (Superstore, The Grinder), via Deadline.

Bo & Cheyenne will focus on the young couple “[balancing] their big dreams with the harsh realities of being a blue-collar family in America” (Deadline). Superstore showrunner Justin Spritzer (The Office, Superstore) and executive producers Ruben Fleischer (Superstore, The Bold Type) and David Bernad (Zombieland: Double Tap, The Bold Type) are attached to the project alongside Kyle and Luu.

Sakura’s Cheyenne has been a staple of Cloud 9 for all six seasons of Superstore, and was just recently promoted to floor supervisor. A pregnant teenager at the start of the series, Cheyenne has since given birth to a daughter, Harmonica, and married her boyfriend, Bo. Cloud 9 fostered more than just the growth of Cheyenne’s character, as Sakura commented that “being a part of a show that went this long has been one of the most unexpected and formative experiences for me” (TVLine).

While Pemberton has only appeared in thirteen episodes of Superstore, his episodes have always been memorable and provided touchstone moments in his relationship with Cheyenne. Screen Rant refers to the couple’s relationship as a “rollercoaster” as Bo, the aspiring rapper, reaps some unique chaos each time he visits Cloud 9.

Superstore’s last eleven episodes may provide some clarification in terms of what audiences can expect from Bo & Cheyenne. Comicbook mentions the possibility of backdoor pilot for Bo & Cheyenne being included in the last stretch of episodes. Screen Rant speculates that Cloud 9 could still remain a set piece in the spin-off series, though it’s unlikely a majority of the spin-off’s action will be set there as “it wouldn’t make sense for Bo & Cheyenne to simply continue the flagship show’s story.”

Wherever Cheyenne ends up at the end of Superstore, fans would certainly be delighted to see appearances from other Superstore characters in the new series. Screen Rant has already nominated Nico Santos (Crazy Rick Asians, Superstore) as a shoe-in, as his character, Mateo, and Cheyenne are close friends on the NBC comedy.

Superstore fans will have to tune in to the final half of season six, starting January 24, to see where their favorite character end up.
