Stephen Dorff Joins ‘True Detective’ Season 3

There was a time where the future of True Detective was up in the air. Now, season 3 appears to be forging ahead steadily as yet another actor joins its cast. Deadline reported this week that actor Stephen Dorff has recently been cast as a lead in HBO’s gritty crime drama.

Casting announcements for the third season of the series have been coming in a steady stream as of late. Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, Moonlight) was the first to be announced as one of the leads, Arkansas state detective Wayne Hays. It was announced in November that Carmen Ejogo (Selma, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) was also added to the cast.

Dorff is best known for his roles in Blade, Sophia Coppola’s Somewhere, and playing PK in The Power of One. The American actor has been cast as Mahershala Ali’s partner, state detective Roland West.

Only a select few details are known about the plot of True Detective season 3. One of the hallmarks of the show is its anthology form, where each installment tells an entirely new story, each bringing a fresh twist to the series. Season 3 is said to take place over three decades. In a return to the form of season 1, which took place in swampy Louisiana, season 3 will take place in a more rural setting amongst the Ozarks. This differs from the more urban setting of season 2, whose story was set in Los Angeles.

While season 1 was famously restricted to one director, Cary Joji Fukunaga, season 2 had a wide variety of directors for its episodes. Season 3 will take yet another different approach and split its directing duties between series creator Nic Pizolatto and Jeremy Saulnier. Nic Pizolatto will also act as showrunner and sole writer for the entire season except for episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch.

HBO has not yet said when fans can expect True Detective season 3 to air.
