Star Trek: Picard Is Already Getting a Season 2 Before Its Premiere

Classic sci-fi has always been a respected genre, and it’s now, it’s making a massive return in Star Trek: Picard after an immense 12 year break. The good news is that Discovery was a resounding success and that the potential for more is right on the horizon. CBS is now moving forward to establish a Star Trek universe with a season 2 right on their streaming service with the help of writer-producer Alex Kurtzman.

For fans of the series, Picard aims to serve as sequel to not only Star Trek: The Next Generation but also to Star Trek: Voyager. It’s a TV show set 20 years after the events in 2002’s Nemesis, and it’ll also call back some of The Next Generation’s cast members. Just to name a few faces, Jonathan Flakes, Brent Spiner, and Marina Sirtis are confirmed to make their appearances on the show’s first season. And, since we already know a second is well on its way, it might not be the last time we see them on the big screen either.

Deadline is reporting that the season 2 will move before the show’s actual launch date on January 23rd. From the information provided, the new season is allocated $20.4 million in California tax incentives for filming. That’s a substantial amount more than the $15.6 granted for the season 1 last year. In addition, the site’s sources claim that it might even be underway sometime next spring.

From the trailer footage, most are getting the idea that it’ll serve as a good entry point for anyone interested in the series. That’s not to say it won’t satisfy veteran fans, as it also seems to do a good job balancing nostalgia and storytelling with the promise of moving the franchise forward. As a series, it’s already anticipated to earn high a viewership count on CBS All Access when it premieres. In the meantime, CBS is putting in their faith and giving the green light for season 2 early, and that’s always a great sign for dedicated fans.
