‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller Sign Deal With Sony to Develop Multiple Series for Movie’s Marvel Characters

Not many would have been able to predict how successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse would be when it was released in theatres last year. The movie became a hit in the box office and has garnered some much-appreciated attention. The comic book movie received quite an achievement when it won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.

Producers of the film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, have inked a five-year deal with Sony Pictures Television to write a series based on Marvel characters from the Spider-verse. The two writers/directors/producers will release live-action comedy, drama series, and animated shows. All of these projects will be developed through their Lord Miller Productions company.

“We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio,” Lord and Miller said in statement. “Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”

Sony released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in December to a positive reaction. Sony will continue to tell the stories from their Marvel universe characters.

“This is a significant milestone for our television business, having the opportunity to work with two of the most creative forces in the industry in both our film and television businesses,” said Mike Hopkins, chairman of Sony Pictures Television. “Building on our strong IP and creating new franchises has been a key focus for SPE, and the best way to do that is to invest in remarkable storytellers like Phil and Chris. We are thrilled to welcome them to the SPT family, and I want to thank Jeff [Frost], Chris [Parnell] and Jason [Clodfelter] for all their hard work in pulling this deal together.”
