Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, signed onto a five-year deal with Sony in April to create live-action comedies, dramas, and animated shows. The estimated nine-figure deal also allows the duo to produce Spider-Verse related projects.
“We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio,” Lord and Miller said in statement. “Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”
Miller and Lord will be developing these shows through their own production company – Lord Miller Productions. “We’ve been talking to a lot of potential teammates for trying to do something not like anything else that’s been done on television,” said Miller. “It’ll be a little while before it all comes together and is on the air, but I think it is going to be something really special.”
Not speaking specifically about the appearance of the web-slinger himself, the Marvel characters surrounding the central figure will have their own shows and stories told.
“We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters,” said Miller. “We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience but are also related.”
These shows will find an eventual home with some guessing a possible Netflix setting, but Miller did not have a certain answer. “Hopefully we’ll know in the next few months where it’ll be and what the schedule will be,” he said.
The duo has an advantage with this Sony deal. They will be able to oversee other projects involving Spider-Man. The relatable hero has been one of Sony’s biggest profits and will continue to be in the years to come. With the huge success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, there’s no doubt why Sony would give Miller and Lord the creative freedom for its most prized possession.
