After a temporary hold by its studio, Deadline reports that Amazon’s Silk: Spider Society’s writers’ room will return to work in January. The series had been delayed in the wake of the WGA strike and was the source of recent litigation between Amazon Studios and the WGA.
Last month, the series was paused following Amazon Studios being threatened with a suit alleging its hold on the series violated the new WGA contract. According to Deadline, the guild informed the studio, “that their failure to recommence a number of writing rooms after the strike is a violation of the Strike Termination Agreement (STA) between the WGA and AMPTP and Article 7 of the MBA.” The statement continued adding that, “studios are obligated to return writers to work ‘upon termination of the strike.” The strike concluded on Sept. 27. The statement went on to say that legal action would be brought against any studio that failed to follow the terms of the STA which specifically instructed studios to allow writers to “recover compensation, interest on late payments, and benefit contributions due as a result of the delay.”
The series is the first of many planned live-action series set in the Spider-Man universe from Across the Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Handling Sony’s TV development, the pair will also oversee Spider-Noir series in the works.
Based on the Marvel comic from Dan Slott (Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1, Fantastic Four) and Humberto Ramos (Strange Academy: First Class, Revelations), Silk follows the character of Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by a radioactive spider, gaining abilities similar to Peter Parker. She first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 until earning her solo series in 2015.
According to Deadline, Angela Kang (The Walking Dead) is the series showrunner and is leading the charge in writing the series. (When first announced, Tom Spezialy (Watchmen) was attached to lead the series.) Lord and Miller serve as executive producers along with Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Challengers).
As a product of Amazon Studios, Deadline reports the series will first stream on MGM+ in the U.S. before appearing in full on Prime Video. It will remain on Prime Video for international audiences. No release date has been announced.
