Season Finale of HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ Earns Series-High Ratings

The finale of HBO’s Euphoria premiered on Sunday night, and the episode reaped series-high ratings. In keeping with the rest of the season, the majority of audience members watched the show through online streaming platforms as opposed to the episode’s initial on-air debut.

When the episode, entitled “And Salt the Earth Behind You,” first aired at 10 p.m. on HBO, it garnered a typical audience of 530,000 members. This is actually slightly below the series average of 560,000 viewers per episode. Thanks to episode replays and online streaming platforms, the audience increased to an impressive 1.2 million members. This marks the first-night high for Euphoria, which premiered on June 16 and spans eight episodes.

Despite the explicit nature of the premiere season, HBO has described Euphoria as its youngest-skewing program. 40 percent of the teen drama’s audience are adults under 35. On streaming platforms, this age demographic makes up two-thirds of viewers.

As of Sunday, Euphoria’s season-wide audience averages out to be roughly 5.6 million viewers. To put this number into context, Big Little Lies garnered multiplatform audience of 10 million members during its second season. This number is approximately six times higher than its linear audience. To no one’s surprise, Game of Thrones’ multiplatform audience was far higher.  Its final season’s multiplatform audience was around 3.7 times higher than its initial tune-in of 12 million viewers. Barry likewise tripled its audience following each episode’s initial airing.

The show was created by Sam Levinson and stars Zendaya, Hunter Schaefer, Angus Cloud, Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, and Eric Dane. To the relief of fans, the show has been renewed for a second season and will remain upon HBO’s drama roster that includes existing shows like Succession, Westworld, Gentleman Jack, The Deuce, and My Brilliant Friend, alongside upcoming new dramas like Mrs. Fletcher, Watchmen, The Nevers, Lovecraft Country, and Contraband.

Euphoria is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and HBO.
