Ronda Rousey Talks Rematch with Holly Holm, Destiny, and Contemplating Suicide on ‘The Ellen Show’

Ronda Rousey is the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion and she’s also the last Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Known for her aggressive fighting style, she caught the public’s eye with her nearly impeccable UFC fighting record including 12 wins and 1 loss. According to UFC’s Website, of her 12 victories, 10 ended in the first round and 9 have been by armbar.

During a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen Show, Rousey publicly discussed in detail the emotional turmoil she underwent following the very public defeat against Holly Holm last November.

Holm managed to knock Rousey out during the second round. Rousey’s loss against Holm caught everyone off guard and prior to their fight tensions were high to say the least between the two UFC fighters.

In the beginning of Rousey’s interview on The Ellen Show, Ellen commented “the loss of this, I mean everyone expected you to win, I expected you, I mean the world expected, you expected to win.” As Ellen was saying this you can see Rousey’s disappointment in herself. In an attempt to analyze what exactly went wrong Ellen’s first question to Rousey was “Did you feel good going in or was there something different this time?” Rousey responded by explaining how prior to fights there is “always so much chaos and so much going on” so in that sense things weren’t really different.

She did go on to explain how the only difference was her being tired due to having three title fights in 9 months and she stated “I don’t think anyone has ever even attempted that before.” Rousey was quick to clarify that she wasn’t using that as an excuse for her loss and how she’s fought in “worse conditions.” Towards the second half of the interview Ellen asked “Did you worry for a minute, like, could this be permanent, did I really hurt myself, and maybe I won’t do this again?” After the question, Rousey choked up and talked about being in the hospital room following her loss thinking “what am I anymore if I’m not this, and I was literally sitting there and thinking about killing myself.” She then discussed how she recalled looking at her boyfriend Travis and realizing that “she needs to stay alive.”

Ellen thanked Rousey for publicly admitting that she thought about suicide which may help those watching who have the same thoughts. Rousey then stated that “everyone has their moment of picking themselves off the floor.” Which is something Rousey did both literally and figuratively. She finished the topic by saying “maybe I just had to be that example of picking myself off the floor for everyone, and maybe that’s what I meant for.”

The interview ended on a higher note with Rousey telling Ellen that she’s prepared to take on Holm again “and beat her and make everything right again.”
