Peter Dinklage, famous for playing the role of Tyrion Lannister, in HBO’s Game of Thrones series, won his fourth Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in Drama Series tonight at the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
With tonight’s win, Dinklage is new record holder for the most wins ever in this category, beating Aaron Paul, who previously held the record for his role on Breaking Bad, according to Deadline.
On receiving the Emmy, Dinklage expressed his appreciation for the award. “I count myself so fortunate to be a member of a community that is all about tolerance and diversity, because nowhere else could I be standing on a stage like this,” the beloved actor said. He went on to convey his love and gratitude for the critically acclaimed series, “It’s been about 10 years, all said and done, from the moment I met David and Dan till now. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew that David and Dan were quite brilliant…We did nothing but sweat, we did nothing but laugh. Dave and Dan, we literally walked through fire and ice for you—literally—and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”
The Emmy-winning actor has been nominated eight times, once for each of the show’s seasons. Tonight, Dinklage was nominated alongside Michael Kelly for House of Cards, Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito, for Better Call Saul, Chris Sullivan for This Is Us, and his fellow Game of Thrones stars, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Alfie Allen.
Dinklage was also nominated for My Dinner with Hervé, an HBO film that he starred in alongside Andy García, and executive produced. The film is one of three HBO films nominated for the category of Outstanding Television Movie, according to Deadline. The Emmy was given to Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
The globally loved series also won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series tonight, after they took the stage for one final time, receiving a standing applause from the audience.
