Andrew Rannells (The New Normal) has been cast in the upcoming Peacock Original comedy series, Girls5eva. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rannells will join Sara Bareilles (writer, Little Voice), Renée Elise Goldsberry (The House with a Clock in Its Walls), Paula Pell (writer, Saturday Night Live) and Busy Philipps (He’s Just Not That Into You), all of whom are already attached to the series.
Girls5eva will follow a 90’s pop girl band who, despite their dreams of making it big, become one-hit wonders. When a up and coming rapper samples part of their hit song, the group, now adult women, reunites in an attempt to return to the spotlight, via The Hollywood Reporter. Bareilles, Goldsberry, Pell, and Phillipps are all cast as members of the music group.
Rannells is set to play Phillipps’ character’s husband, Kev, a former member of boy band Boyz Next Door, and will be a recurring character throughout the series, via The Hollywood Reporter. Back in their glory days, Phillipps’ character, Summer, and Kev were once the “it” couple of the pop music scene, but their marriage is now suffering due to Kev’s work.
The series is executive produced by Tina Fey (writer, Mean Girls), Robert Carlock (writer, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), and Meredith Scardino (writer, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scardino is credited as the series’ creator. In addition to Scardino, Fey, and Carlock, David Miner (producer, 30 Rock) and Eric Gurian (producer, Busy Tonight) are attached to executive produce the series. The pilot episode of the series will be directed by Kat Coiro (director, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia).
Most recently, Rannells has starred in the Showtime series Black Monday as Blair Pfaff and voiced the character of William Clockwell in Invincible, according to his IMDb page. He is additionally known for his work in the HBO series Girls and for starring as Darren in A Simple Favor.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Girls5eva is set to consist of eight episodes with the complete first season scheduled to premiere on Peacock on May 6.
