Paramount TV and Hulu are Working with the Russo Brothers to Adapt ‘The Warriors’ into a TV Series

According to Deadline, the 1979 gang-thriller film, based off the 1965 novel of the same name, is being adapted into a television series. Can you dig it?

Sol Yurick wrote his original novel in 1965, which is based off of the famous Greek work “Anabasis”, and told the journey of the Coney Island Dominators as they tried to make their way back home following a failed street gang meeting in the Bronx. The novel delved into notions of manhood, reputation, sexuality, and family. The novel inspired the 1979 film by Walter Hill, due to the large time gap between the film and novel many key changes were made in order to better reflect the the current culture and society. The film also changed the name of the main gang to the Warriors, and added further tension to their odyssey by having the Warriors framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. The film became a cult classic and spawned a comic book series, video games, and several spinoffs.

Now, lovers of the gritty New York City gangs created by Yurick and Hill can look forward to diving back into The Warriors thanks to the efforts of Joe and Anthony Russo, who are just coming off of their huge success with Captain America: Civil War. The Russo brothers are taking a break from superhero world of marvel and going straight into the sex filled and violent world of The Warriors, hoping to honor the original film while adding their own unique style and flavor. The series will be a Paramount Television Production in association with Hulu and will feature the Russo brothers and Mike Larocca (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) as producers. The producer of the original film, Lawrence Gordon, will return as an executive producer for the series.

There is no word yet on when production is set to begin, but the Russo brothers are set to direct the series pilot sometime soon. It is not know if another director will be hired for the rest of the series.

For those interested in getting a feel for what the series may offer, the original film is available on Netflix. For game lovers looking to come out and play in the world of The Warriors, the 2005 Rockstar Games game appeared on the PlayStation store today for purchase on the PS4 with full 1080p up-rendering.
