Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch and Vision are returning to Marvel Universe but not in the expected way. At San Diego Comic Con this past June, Kevin Feige announced that the duo will be getting their own WandaVision television show on the Disney+ streaming service. Wanda, played by Elizabeth Olsen, first made her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron alongside Vision, played by Paul Bettany. Bettany first appeared in the MCU back in 2008 in Iron Man where he played the voice of JARVIS. The two have been pairing alongside each other since Age of Ultron all the way to Vision’s heartbreaking death in Avengers: Endgame.
Upon learning of his death, Feige talked with Bettany and before pitching the show Bettany believed he was going to be fired. Bettany stated, “Oh, I don’t think that myself or Lizzie have ever been more surprised when Kevin pitched the idea to us. A and One, I thought I was being brought in to be fired; B and Two, I thought they were gonna let me down, you know, like, ‘Listen, Paul, we love you, but…’ And instead what he did was pitch this idea for a sort of six hour movie that I would never in a million years, which is why he’s the one earning the really big bucks, have thought of. And it’s so avant-garde and weird and messed up and then moves seamlessly into more familiar territory. But the place that it starts is so odd.”
Since the announcement of their show fans have been speculating what it will be about. There is no official synopsis for it yet but fans know that it is set to be “half sitcom, half MCU spectacular.” Bettany has stated, “Ah, well, through the genius of Marvel and Kevin Feige, there’s an answer to that but it’s not one that I can give you.” Olsen then added, “But it’s one that you will learn when you watch our show!” Luckily for fans, D23 was this past weekend and they got a little bit more of a look into the show with the release of the shows poster.
The poster shows Wanda and Vision in a 1950’s setting that is building on the “nuclear family” ideals of the time period. Upon a closer look, fans can see the shadows of the characters in their superhero costumes, including Scarlet Witch in her comic book outfit.
Also at D23, Marvel announced some newcomers to the show. Thor’s Kat Dennings and Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Randall Park are set to reprise their MCU roles. They also announced that Teyonah Parris will be portraying the older version of Captain Marvel’s Monica Rambeau, and Kathryn Hahn will appear in the series as the noisy neighbor.
Matt Shakman and Jac Schaeffer are set to showrun the series. The duo described the show, “They are such an unusual pairing, right? He’s [Vision] not human but he’s more human than anyone, maybe,” Shakman reflects. “He always has the best, most wise things to say. He completely sees the world for what it is. She’s gone through so much trauma. She’s lost her brother, she’s an orphan, and all these different things have happened to her. I think we’ve all been quite taken by that union. It’s [WandaVision] is the exploration of that bizarre, strange, completely right kind of love and it’s about watching them explore their relationship and growing it.”
WandaVision will be released on the Disney+ app in Spring of 2021. Also fans of Scarlet Witch can catch her in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
