Nominations For the 2016 Primetime Emmys Released, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The People vs. O.J. Simpson’ and ‘Fargo’ Lead the Pack

On July 14, the list of the official nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards were announced live by black-ish star Anthony Anderson and Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham. Overall, Game of Thrones, The People vs. O.J. Simpson and Fargo had the most nominations as Game of Thrones had 23, The People vs. O.J. Simpson had 22 and Fargo had 18, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

HBO has the most amount of nominations this year, with their programming have a total of 94 nominations, according to a press release from the network. Another one of the big cable networks, Showtime, had 22 nominations this year, according to a press release.

To no one’s surprise, The People vs. O.J. Simpson did incredibly well with award nominations. The show, which is the number one new cable show and the number two cable show of the past season, saw many of the cast nominated for awards, including Sarah Paulson’s portrayal of Marcia Clark and Cuba Gooding Jr.’s portrayal of O.J. Simpson.

That being said, it’s once again a shock that cable’s number one show, The Walking Dead, didn’t receive any nominations. Nor did its spinoff, Fear The Walking Dead. Instead, Fear The Walking Dead Flight 462 received two nominations, one for Michelle Ang for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and one nomination for Outstanding Special Class Program.

Another snub was Netflix’s Jessica Jones, who, despite critical praise, only received nominations for Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Main Title Theme Music. Many thought that series Krysten Ritter would get a nomination, but was shut out of the Lead Actress category for this year’s award.

In fact, besides House of Cards, Netflix had some troubles, as Orange Is The New Black was only nominated for Outstanding Casting in a Drama Series. This is even coming after a win last year by Uzo Aduba and a win this past year at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Comedy Series. But, because the show was switched from comedy to a drama at the Emmys, it put the show up against more competition for nominations.

Even The Good Wife, which has been a perennial nomination in a few categories was snubbed for its final season, though it was a considerably weaker season than the show has been in years past. This year, it was only nominated for Guest Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Costume and Outstanding Writing. Christine Baranski, who has been nominated for her role as Diane Lockhart since 2010, wasn’t nominated for her role this year, instead being nominated for her role on The Big Bang Theory again.

But enough about the snubs. There were some delightful surprises in this year’s nominations as well. First up: Lifetime’s UnREAL. Even though the show is beloved by critics and does fairly well for Lifetime’s ratings, it seemed like a long shot that it would be nominated for one of the more well-known categories, but it was. Constance Zimmer, who plays Quinn King on the show, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Also surprising is seeing Mr. Robot nominated for six awards, including the stiff competition in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series, where it’s up against House of Cards, Homeland, Game and Thrones and the final season of Downton Abbey.

There’s many examples of actors and actresses being nominated for multiple awards because of different roles. Sarah Paulson is nominated for Lead Actress in a Limited Series (for The People vs. O.J. Simpson) and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (for American Horror Story: Hotel). Laurie Metcalf is also nominated in three different categories for her roles in The Big Bang TheoryGetting On and Horace and Pete.

This set of nominations is different from other awards shows in terms of diversity. Variety has reported that nearly 25 percent of the nominees this year are actors of color. This year, there’s 18 people of color actors out of 73 in the major categories, and it’s up from last year, when there were 16 out of 75 people of color nominated for awards.

If Aziz Ansari wins an Emmy, he will be the first person of southern Asian descent to win an Emmy. However, there’s only two nominations for people of Latin descent, with Jane the Virgin‘s Anthony Mendez (the narrator) and Oscar Nuñez being nominated for Crossroads of History.

The Los Angeles Times has a complete list of all the nominations this year, including some surprise nominations and snub nominations in some of the categories.
