After six seasons on Netflix, BoJack Horseman will finally come to an end. The streamer announced this news on Friday, explaining that the upcoming season will be the animation’s last. Netflix also disclosed that the final season will air in two parts. Part 1 will be available for streaming on October 25th 2019, and Part 2 will not be available until January 31st 2020.
BoJack Horseman premiered in August 2014. Since then, it has been subject to critical acclaim. It follows a failed 90s sitcom star, BoJack, who is struggling to navigate whiskey, self-loathing, and interpersonal relationships. Will Arnett voices the titular role. The popular adult animated comedy also features the voices of actors Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tomkins, and Aaron Paul. Raphael Bob-Waksberg created the series, which he executive produces alongside Steven A. Cohen, Noel Bright, Arnett, and Paul. The series boasts 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.6/10 on IMDb. Writer and critic Lester Fabien Brathwaite summarized the series’ successes in review with the Observer, wherein he writes “It strikes a perfect balance between genuine laughter and laughing through the tears. And that’s how it distinguishes itself from so many other sitcoms currently on television.”
After BoJack Horseman ends, fans will still be able to enjoy reruns of it on Comedy Central. The cabler acquired the rights from Debmar-Mercury and The Tornante Company in a 2018 syndication agreement.
Netflix has also released a trailer for the sixth and final season, which features Bojack writing to his friend Diane (played by Brie) from a rehabilitation center.
“Every time someone leaves rehab, it makes you think about your own progress. I bought into this idea that I was the thing that couldn’t be changed, but the main thing I think about is how stupid I am that I didn’t do this sooner. I wasted so many years being miserable because I assumed that was the only way to be, and I don’t want to be that anymore,” the horse writes.
