According to The Hollywood Reporter, Norman Lear’s sitcom One Day at a Time, from the mid 70s to the early 80s is returning. The remake will feature 13 episodes and will revolve around a Latino family.
Additionally, Rita Moreno the veteran actress who has received an Emmy, Oscar, Tony, and Grammy will be co-starring on the show.
The new version of One Day at a Time is about a family with a recently divorced and former military mom attempting to adjust to a new single life all while raising her socially adept tween son and her radical teenage daughter with the help of her traditional Cuban-born mother (Rita Moreno) and a friends-without-benefits building manager named Schneider.
The original series ran for nine season on CBS from 1975-1984 and starred Bonnie Franklin as the divorced mother who moved to an Apartment building with her two daughters (Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli). This is where the family became acquainted with Schneider portrayed by Pat Harrington Jr.
The news regarding the Once Day at a Time remake came days after Harrington Jr. passed away at the age of 86. Harrington Jr. received an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Schneider in One Day at a Time.
The series’ remake is co-written by Gloria Calderon Kellett (How I Met Your Mother) and Mike Royce (Everybody Loves Raymond). Kellett and Royce will also serve as showrunners. Lear is set to produce the new series which was originally created by married couple Whitney Blake and Allan Manings who based the show on Blake’s life as a single mother raising her daughter (Meredith Baxter).Other producers for the remake of One Day at a Time will be Michael Garcia and Brent Miller.
