According to Collider, Netflix just announced that filming for the second season of Heartstopper is complete. The streamer made an official announcement on its twitter account earlier today.
The British coming-of-age drama was an instant success for Netflix, dominating the top ten charts immediately following its premiere in April of this year, via Collider. The show is based on the graphic novel and webcomic series written and illustrated by British author Alice Oseman (Loveless, Heartstopper Volume I). The series is made up of five books.
The first season of Heartstopper is based on the first and second volumes of the novel. Season one follows Nick Nelson, played by Kit Connor (Rocketman), a popular jock who recently begins to question his sexuality. Under this time, Nick becomes friends with Charlie Spring, played by Joe Locke (Agatha: Coven of Chaos). Charlie, who was recently outed, comes to wonder whether or not he wants to be more than just friends with Nick.
The second season of Heartstopper will be a continued adaptation of Volume three of the novel series. Nick and Charlie’s friendship blossoms from platonic to romantic, and the two start dating. Inspired by his new relationship, Nick makes the decision to come out to his mother.
As stated by Collider, the second season will show the pair on a school trip to Paris. During this trip, Nick and Charlie face the dilemma over whether or not to reveal their relationship to their peers.
The streamer announced that the second season would feature new cast members, including Jack Barton as David (Poor Things), and Nima Taleghani (Hatton Garden) as Mr. Farouk, a new teacher at Truham secondary school. Leila Khan will also make her acting debut in the second season, playing the role of Sahar Zahid. Social media stars Ash Self and Bel Priestly have also been added to the cast, according to Collider.
The second season of Heartstopper will be made up of eight episodes. According to TVLine, the series was also renewed for a third season in May of this year. At the moment, Netflix has not announced an official premiere date or a trailer.
