Netflix Western Series ‘Godless’ Casts Jeff Daniels and Merrit Wever

Emmy-winners Jeff Daniels and Merrit Wever are getting ready to saddle up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has officially cast Daniels and Wever alongside Jack O’Connell (’71, Unbroken, Starred Up) in its upcoming Western limited series Godless. At the end of May it was reported that both Daniels (The Lookout, The Newsroom, Steve Jobs) and Scoot McNairy (Monsters, Killing Them Softly, Black Sea) were in talks to join the cast. With Daniels now signed on, one can only keep their fingers crossed that McNairy will soon follow suit.

Daniels is set to play the violent, intimidating outlaw Frank Griffin in the series. Wever (Nurse Jackie, The Walking Dead, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) has been cast as Mary Agnes. Agnes is a widow, once married to the mayor of the town of La Bella, which has become solely populated by women ever since all of the town’s men died in a mining accident.

The Steven Soderbergh (The Knick, Red Oaks, The Girlfriend Experience) and Scott Frank (The Lookout, Minority Report, Marley & Me) series takes place in 1884 and follows cruel outlaw Frank Griffin (Daniels) as he hunts down former partner/pseudo-son Roy Goode (O’Connell). On Griffin’s hunt for Goode, who is hiding out at Alice Fletcher’s ranch, Griffin stumbles upon Mary Agnes (Wever) and the all female town of La Belle.

Daniels and Wever also join Jeremy Bobb (The Knick‘s mesmerizing, skeevy Barrow) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Maze Runner, Game of Thrones, Phineas and Ferb) in Godless. Bobb will play Santa Fe Daily Review editor A.T. Grigg, who has spent most of his career obsessively writing about the Griffin Gang and their exploits. Brodie-Sangster will play young and fearless town deputy Whitey Winn.

Frank and Soderbergh are executive producers on Godless along with Casey Silver. Frank is also set to write and direct the limited series.
