Netflix Orders New Marvel Series

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both companies announced today that Marvel will delevop at least four superheroes-themed shows and a miniseries for Netflix.

Netflix has commited to a minimum of four shows, each one with 13-episodes, that will begin in 2015, followed by a miniseries.

The four shows are expected to focus on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, in that order; the miniseries will be about The Defenders, a team of selfless heroes.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling,”  said Alan Fine, Marvel Entertainment president. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos also expressed his excitement about the new deal, “Marvel’s movies, such as Iron Man and Marvel’s The Avengers, are huge favorites on our service around the world. (…) We’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

The four new shows and miniseries join Netflix’s roster of original scripted shows, which already includes the successful Orange Is The New Black, House of Cards and Lilyhammer, among others.
