The Irregulars will not be returning for season two. According to TVLine, Netflix has cancelled the Sherlock Holmes inspired drama series after only one season on the streaming platform.
In The Irregulars, a group of misguided street kids became the pawns of an evil Dr. John Watson (played by Royce Pierreson, The Witcher) and Sherlock Holmes (played by Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Killing Eve). The group of teens, who are forced to solve supernatural crimes for Watson and Holmes, consist of Be (played by Thaddea Graham, The Letter for the King), Spike (played by McKell David, Black Mirror), Billy (played by Jojo Macari, Sex Education), and Jessie (played by Darcy Shaw, The Bay), via TVLine.
The series has met a quick demise, as all eight episodes only released on the streaming giant on March 26. However, The Irregulars is not alone in its cancellation. According to TVLine, Netflix has also cancelled The Duchess, Hoops, The Order and Away, and Queen Sono. Netflix additionally announced that Castlevania is set to end after season four, the series’ final season, releases on May 13. Similarly, season five of The Last Kingdom will complete that series.
Via Deadline, The Irregulars was produced by the production company behind Doctor Foster, Drama Republic. The Irregulars was written by Tom Bidwell (writer, Watership Down) and executive produced by both Bidwell and Greg Brenman (producer, Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned). Also attached to the project as a producer is Rebecca Hodgson (producer, Free Rein). The series was directed by newcomer Johnny Allan, Weronika Tofilska (director, Love Life), and Joss Agnew (director, Poldark).
The cancellation came as a shock to many fans, as Netflix had heavily promoted the series. According to IGN, the series received Nielsen data proving it was the most popular show of the week, beating out Disney+’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Reportedly, 643 million minutes of The Irregulars were streamed.
