Netflix Announces Season 2 Release Date for Sex Education

Netflix announced the second season of their show Sex Education today. Through their UK & Ireland Twitter account, they tweeted, “Get in losers, the new term is starting. Sex Education s2 streaming 17 January 2020.”

Sex Education launched on Netflix in early January of 2019. With stars like Otis Milburn and Gillian Anderson, there was buzz ahead of its release. The synopsis of season one reads, “Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) is an inexperienced, socially awkward high school student who lives with his mother, Jean (Gillian Anderson), a sex therapist. Surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis is a reluctant expert on the subject. When his home life is revealed at school, Otis realizes that he can use his specialist knowledge to gain status.”

Netflix rarely releases viewership numbers for its shows. But, a week after Sex Education was released onto the streaming platform, Netflix reported that over forty million subscribers had viewed the series.

Season two of Sex Education was announced on February 1, 2019, only three weeks after its premiere.

In the official synopsis for season two, Netflix states, “In season 2, as a late bloomer Otis [Butterfield] must master his newly discovered sexual urges in order to progress with his girlfriend Ola whilst also dealing with his now strained relationship with Maeve. Meanwhile, Moordale Secondary is in the throes of a Chlamydia outbreak, highlighting the need for better sex education at the school and new kids come to town who will challenge the status quo.”

Netflix picked up Sex Education in late November of 2017. Creator, Laurie Nunn, worked with Eleven Film, affiliated with Channel 4, to bring the show to Netflix. The show is Nunn’s first credited television show. She is credited as creator, writer, and executive producer.

Sex Education season two returns to Netflix on January 17.
