NBC’s medical drama New Amsterdam is coming to an end. According to Deadline, the network has announced the premiere date for the series finale. The finale will consist of a two-hour episode airing at 9 p.m. on January 17, 2023. The show will return from its hiatus on January 3rd at 10 p.m.
New Amsterdam was created by David Schulner (The Event, Esmerald City) who also worked as the executive producer alongside director Peter Horton (American Odyssey, Ironside) and Universal Television. Other executive producers include Michael Slovis (Pizza Party, Preacher), David Foster (Scorpion, House), Shaun Cassidy (Invasion, Blue Bloods), Aaron Ginsburg (The 100, Intelligence), and Erika Swafford-Green (The Mentalist, How to Get Away with Murder). Also serving as a producer is Dr. Eric Manheimer, the former medical director at New York City’s Bellevue Hospital and author of the memoir Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, which served as an inspiration for the series.
The series stars Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist, A Jazzman’s Blue) as Dr. Max Goodwin who works with Dr. Lauren Bloom played by Janet Montgomery (Salem, Think Like a Dog), Dr. Iggy Frome played by Tyler Labine (Sam & Kate, Voltron: Legendary Defender), Dr. Helen Sharpe played by Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who, Sense 8), Dr. Floyd Reynolds played by Jocko Sims (The Last Ship, The Resident) and Nurse Casey Acosta played by Alejandro Hernandez (Instinct, Partner Track).
According to Deadline, the show was praised for its efforts to “fold in public health issues and approaches that don’t often make it to hospital or medical television shows” which was shown on New Amsterdam with storylines about the environmental damage caused by hospitals and how to solve issues such as nutrition, affordability of health care, the opioid pandemic, and the impacts the pandemic had on the health system.
Deadline revealed in March that the show would be coming to an end with a 13-episode season five, a shorter season than usual. At the end of its run, the series will have a total of 92 episodes.
New Amsterdam follows Dr. Max Goodwin’s journey as the medical director of the New Amsterdam hospital, America’s oldest public hospital. During the show, the viewers see how Max handles the responsibility of being a father and guiding a hospital while trying to help all the patients. Throughout the show, the viewers can see the personal battles that the doctors are fighting while trying to help patients.
Seasons one through four of New Amsterdam are available to stream on Peacock. Season five is available to watch on the NBC channel.
