NBC Extends ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ to an 18-Episode Season Before Premiere on the New Network

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s first season on NBC has just been extended from 13 episodes to 18. The sitcom, set in a police precinct in the title borough, aired on Fox before recently being picked up by NBC after a cancellation on the original network.

The comedic program centers on a group of detectives in the 99th division of the Brooklyn Police Department, but is far from being as serious as the real ones most likely are. Instead, the gangly “force” take on some of the strangest criminals bound to be met in NYC, while growing into a family who are bound by more than just their shared workplace.

At the head of the series is Andy Samberg, a staple in comedic television since his reign on Saturday Night Live over a decade ago. Here he started to explore the possibilities of the genre with digital shorts, a format he helped to grow exponentially, before starring in movies, the aforementioned sitcom, and even hosting the Emmy Awards. However, his role as the quick-witted Jake Peralta is a very respectable choice for one of his greatest accomplishments so far, as his portrayal of the detective mixes goofiness, fast-talking, and a love of Die Hard in a way no show has done before. In addition to Samberg, the show also stars Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Andre Braugher, Chelsea Peretti, and Joe Lo Truglio.

When Fox announced the cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine after airing five seasons of the program, the stars of the show were quick to share their sadness regarding the bittersweet moment. However, fans did not want to let the show go without a fight. A national social media campaign skyrocketed within a matter of hours in which fans of the show, including the cast and crew themselves, asked for someone else to pick up the series. This may have seemed like a long shot once, but with the power of social media today, the chance of being noticed was far more likely.

Luckily, NBC, home to some of the most successful comedies in television history like Cheers, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, and Samberg’s old home at SNL, announced they were willing and able to save the show from an all-too-early ending. This news brought excitement to fans across the country, who were thrilled by the fact that they would get to watch more crazy days in the lively precinct.

Although the show’s first season at NBC has yet to be attached to a premiere date, the network’s expansion of their original deal brought even more joy to the viewers, cast, and crew of the show. This is not only because more content will be provided, but also because this can be seen as a sign of just how great the newest season may be. With those behind the scenes of the company likely having loved what they’d seen before making their bold decision, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is almost assuredly in great hands.
