Netflix’s Narcos franchise has officially come to an end. According to ScreenRant, co-creator Chris Brancato (Species II, Godfather of Harlem, First Wave) recently confirmed that he considers the story finished and does not currently plan to return to the crime franchise.
Created by Brancato alongside Carlo Bernard (The Great Wall, The Uninvited, Griselda) and Doug Miro (Griselda, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Great Wall), Narcos premiered on Netflix in 2015. The series initially followed the rise and fall of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel before shifting its focus to the Cali Cartel during its third season.
The series starred Wagner Moura (Elite Squad, The Secret Agent, Civil War) as Escobar alongside Boyd Holbrook (Logan, A Complete Unknown, The Bikeriders) and Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian, The Fantastic Four: First Steps). Additional cast members included Damián Alcázar (Cronicas, The Mongolian Conspiracy, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), Joanna Christie (Elementary, The Girl and the Fish, Hawaii Five-0), Maurice Compte (Hotel Cocaine, Breaking Bad, End of Watch), and Alberto Ammann (Cell 211, Anna, Upon Entry).
Following the conclusion of Narcos in 2017, the franchise continued with Narcos: Mexico, which ran for three seasons from 2018 to 2021. The spinoff explored the development of Mexico’s drug trade and starred Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Book of Life, Open Range) and Michael Peña (American Hustle, Crash, End of Watch).
While speaking about the future of the franchise, Brancato explained that his portion of the Narcos story, particularly its focus on Escobar, has been fully told. His longtime collaborator Michael Panes (We Bought a Zoo, Infamous, Broken English) also suggested that there are no current plans to continue the franchise.
Brancato has since continued working within the crime genre and will next turn his attention to The Westies, an upcoming drama inspired by the Irish-American organized crime gang of the same name. The series stars J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Juno, La La Land), Tom Brittney (Make Me Famous, Greyhound, Grantchester), Jessica Frances Dukes (Earth Abides, Ozark, Gray Matter), and Titus Welliver (The Town, Man on a Ledge, Transformers: Age of Extinction).
The Narcos franchise consists of six seasons between Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. No additional installments are currently planned.
