Melissa Benoist and Julia Garner Join ‘Waco’ as Co-Stars

According to Deadline Hollywood, Melissa Benoist and Julia Garner have been cast in lead roles opposite Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch in upcoming six-part series Waco on the newly re-branded Spike channel, which is now Viacom’s Paramount Network.

Waco is a limited six-part series that is based on the true events of a 51-day siege and standoff in Waco, Texas that ended in a deadly fire in 1993. The series will tell the story from several points of view according to Deadline Hollywood and will likely explore explanations for the origin of the fire that engulfed the Mount Carmel Center where David Koresh’s spiritual sect, The Branch Davidians, were residing.

Melissa Benoist (who plays Supergirl on Supergirl) will play Koresh’s wife Rachel Koresh and the matriarch of Mount Carmel. Julia Garner will play Michelle Jones who was Rachel’s younger sister who had a child with David Koresh. Michael Shannon of Empire will play FBI negotiator Gary Noesner and Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch will play religious leader David Koresh. John Leguizamo, Andrea Riseborough, Rory Culkin, Paul Sparks and Shea Whigham have all also been cast.

Waco is written by John Erick Dowdle, Drew Dowdle, Salvatore Stabile, and Sarah Nicole Jones.

Waco is currently in filming in Santa Fe, new Mexico. The miniseries is produced by Weinstein Television and will premiere during the same time that Paramount Network will officially launch: in January 2018. Many of Spike’s more popular unscripted shows will transition over to Paramount Network, including: Ink Master, Bar Rescue, and Bellator MMA.
