HBO’s Rooster has promoted Maximo Salas (Little Brother, Stranger Things, The Runarounds), Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids, Bad Moms, The Idea of You) and Rory Scovel (Babylon, I Feel Pretty, The House) to series regulars for the show’s second season. According to Deadline, all three actors appeared in recurring roles during the first season.
Salas portrays Tommy, the son of Cristle, played by Mumolo. During the first season, Tommy developed a connection with Greg Russo, portrayed by Steve Carell (The Office, Despicable Me, The Big Short), through their shared interest in writing. Mumolo’s Cristle works as an assistant to Ludlow College president Walter Mann, played by John C. McGinley (Scrubs, Point Break, Seven), and also shared a romantic spark with Greg during the first season.
Scovel portrays Officer Donnie Mullins, who frequently keeps an eye on Greg throughout the series.
Rooster is set on the campus of Ludlow College and follows author Greg Russo after he visits the school, where his daughter Katie, played by Charly Clive (Pure, All My Friends Hate Me, The Lazarus Project), teaches art history. After delivering a guest lecture, Greg is offered a visiting professorship and seminar position by Mann, leading him to remain on campus despite Katie’s attempts to navigate her personal life independently.
The series also stars Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall, Till, Carry-On) as Dylan Shepherd, Lauren Tsai (Moxie, Legion, Game of Spy) as Sunny Salewski and Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso, The Devil’s Hour, Save Me) as Archie Bates. Connie Britton (Nashville, American Ultra, Friday Night Lights) and Alan Ruck (Twister, Speed, Star Trek: Generations) appeared as guest stars during the first season.
The first season of Rooster premiered to 2.4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers during its first three days of availability, making it HBO’s most-watched comedy debut in more than a decade. The season averaged 6.5 million U.S. viewers per episode across its 10-episode run.
Season two is co-showrun by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Scrubs) and Matt Tarses (Scrubs, Sports Night, Bad Monkey). Lawrence, Jeff Ingold (Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey), Liza Katzer (Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey), Tarses, Barbie Adler (Arrested Development, Nobody Wants This, My Name Is Earl), Annie Mebane (Shrinking, The Goldbergs, The Chicken Sisters), David Hyman (You People, Veep, Nobody 2) and Carell serve as executive producers. Warner Bros. Television serves as the studio behind the series.
