HBO comedy series Rooster has officially broken a major streaming record for the network following the success of its debut season. According to Screen Rant, the 10-episode comedy has become HBO’s biggest comedy debut in more than 15 years, averaging over six million viewers across season one since premiering on March 8, 2026. The achievement makes Rooster the highest-viewed HBO comedy during its first 90 days since series such as Hung and Sex and the City.
Rooster is co-created by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking) and Matt Tarses (Bad Monkey, Scrubs), and stars Steve Carell (The Office, The Morning Show) as author Greg Russo. The series follows Russo as he visits the fictional Ludlow College in New England under the guise of a book talk while secretly attempting to reconnect with his daughter, Katie, played by Charly Clive (The Lazarus Project, All My Friends Hate Mate).
Additional cast members include Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso, The Devil’s Hour), Alan Ruck (Twister, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Danielle Deadwyler (Carry-On, The Harder They Fall), and Sabrina Impacciatore (The Paper, The White Lotus). The comedy currently holds an 88% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its season one finale. HBO renewed the series in April 2026, signaling strong confidence in the comedy’s future on the platform.
The success of Rooster also continues Lawrence’s streak of critically acclaimed television comedies across multiple streaming platforms. In addition to Rooster, Lawrence is currently involved with series including Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey, and the Scrubs revival. Lawrence has become one of television’s most successful comedy creators in recent years through his work across streaming platforms including Apple TV+ and HBO.
With several weeks still remaining in its initial 90-day viewing window, Rooster could continue increasing its audience numbers and potentially become one of HBO’s most successful comedy series in recent years.
