Maureen Callahan’s Novel, ‘Champagne Supernova’s,’ to be Adapted by AMC Studios

AMC Studios will adapt Maureen Callahan’s novel, Champagne Supernovas, into a fashion drama, per The Hollywood Reporter. Callahan was prominent style and pop culture journalist in the ’90’s. The creator of the television adaptation is Rolin Jones (producer, Weeds; producer, Friday Night Lights), who is also known for co-creating the 2020 miniseries period drama, Perry Mason, which is based off of the 1957 American television mystery series under the same name.

Jones does not have a contract with any network or streamer as of yet. He instead plans on shopping the show to potential platforms. It is unclear to what extent Callahan will be involved in the making of the adaptation. The novel loosely follows the story of British fashion photographer Corrine Day. The reader observes the ’90’s fashion revolution through her eyes, and is taken “back to the 90s, to the moment when supermodel glamazons gave way to heroin chic, the alternative became the mainstream, and fashion became the cradle for the most exciting artistic and cultural innovations of the age” (Goodreads).

The book is chock full of gossip that enveloped the fashion world at the time, revealing the juicy details of drama that happened years ago. One reviewer said,”I adored the endless (and endlessly entertaining) stream of bitchy gossip that spewed forth from the interviewees in this book” (Goodreads). Prominent celebrities heavily featured in the book include Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen, making it very likely that Jones’ adaptation will have characters based on them.

Sheila Callaghan (producer, Shameless; writer, United States of Tara) will work alongside Jones to write a script for the adaptation. Both of them will executive produce the series with Johnny Lin (producer, American Made; producer, Hesher), who acquired the rights to the novel in 2017.
