The last year and a half has been hectic for most studios with the pandemic putting a hard squeeze on the ability to churn out great shows. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has definitely felt this squeeze as their entire film schedule had to be realigned. At the same time, though, the company has found its bread and butter with the new streaming content being introduced like clockwork. After three spectacular shows gaining critical and fan acclaim alike, the giant studio has turned its sights toward their next big project, Moon Knight.
Moon Knight is set to star Oscar Isaac (Dune) as Marc Spector/Moon Knight and Ethan Hawke (Before trilogy) as an undisclosed villain. Many fans have given their two cents on which villain the characters should take on. There is some speculation the Sinister actor will portray the pyrokinetic Sun King or Werewolf by Night.
Now, according to Comic Book, another villain has been confirmed alongside Hawk’s bad guy. French actor, Gaspard Ulliel (Saint Laurent), is set to play Anton Mogart, more commonly known as Midnight Man. Mogart was given that name as the art thief only works at midnight.
The character was first introduced in the comics in 1981. He was caught by the Moon Knight and thrown into the river below, presumably dead. He later comes back in Moon Knight #9 with a disfigured face due to having to go through the sewer after his plunge. Midnight Man is known for being an underling to Bushman, another archenemy of Spector’s.
There is plenty of enthusiasm surrounding the show, even though it will depict a relatively unknown set of characters. Hawke expressed this sentiment when he talked on The Ringer’s podcast, The Watch, about why he signed on to the show. “I love the fact that Moon Knight is a lesser-known story and allows more creative freedom.” If it is anything like Guardians of the Galaxy, another set of less popular characters getting a headlining project, the show will knock it out of the park.
The original series is written by Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy) and set to be directed by Mohamed Diab (Clash) along with the duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (The Endless). Kevin Feige (Black Widow) is set to produce the show as is the case with most Marvel projects.
Moon Knight is set to release on Disney+ in 2022 so fans will need to practice the virtue of patience for the next little bit. In the meantime, though, stay tuned for more info on the show as it continues to move through the production process.
