Marvel and Hulu Announce Cast for ‘Runaways’

Exciting news out of the Marvel Universe!

Hulu and Marvel studios have finally announced casting for the highly anticipated show based on Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphonsa’s cult classic comic, Runaways. It was announced in August of 2016 that the comic would be developed by Gossip Girl’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

The series will be a further expansion of the Marvel Universe and the first Marvel installment created for Hulu. Marvel Studios has enjoyed success in 2016 on Netflix with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Daredevil, and will premiere Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher in 2017.

Runaways was in development to be a feature film in 2008, following the immense success of Iron Man. However, it never quite got off the ground and was more or less shelved as a feature/sequel in 2013.

Thankfully, Hulu and Marvel Studios have saved Runaways from staying two dimensional. One of the comic’s creators, Brian K. Vaughn, will serve as executive consultant on the series, which should be comforting to purists who want the series to maintain the integrity of the comic.

Six people have been cast for the series, which revolves around a group of diverse teens who have a bit more to worry about than snapchat filters and retweets. The kids find out that their parents are actually members of a nefarious group of supervillains known as ‘The Pride’. One ill-fated fund-raising soiree in Malibu, the kids accidentally interrupt their parents’ murder ritual and witness them killing a young woman in order to gain power to rule the world. Upon the gruesome discovery, the teens decide to runaway together a form a valiant coalition against their murderous parents. If that weren’t enough, their folks have manipulated law enforcement and politicians and framed their runaway teens for the murder of the woman sacrificed. 99 problems, but prom ain’t one.

Teen Wolf’s Rhenzy Feliz will be playing Alex Wilder, a child intellectual prodigy who doesn’t technically have a superpower, but is blessed with immense and superior genius.

Lyrica Okano, of The Affair, will be playing Nico Minoru, the resident goth chick witch, who can cast spells while worshipping Robert Smith.

Virginia Gardner, of Project Almanac, is Karolina Dean, who is an alien that harnesses solar energy.

New Girl’s Ariela Barer will be playing Gert Yorkes, a badass chick who has a telepathic link with a genetically engineered dinosaur because of  her time traveling evil parents.

Gregg Sulkin is Chase Stein, who steals future gloves from his mad-scientist parents and brings together the group fulfilling different roles as needed, from wild card to tech guru.

Last but not least, Allegra Acosta will be Molly Hernandez, a hydra-type mutant who discovers that she has super-strength.

In response to the casting Vaughn released a statement saying,

‘I’m so excited for fans of the comic to watch this perfect cast of amazing actors, all of whom embody the spirit of their characters more than I ever could have imagined.’

There hasn’t been a confirmed release date and no word as to whether this is a standalone series or part of the greater Marvel universe.
