Following her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie has enjoyed an explosive career. Playing major roles in blockbusters like Suicide Squad and The Legend of Tarzan, the Australian actress was nominated this year for an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG for her lead role as Tonya Harding in the black comedy/drama I, Tonya.
Now, according to Vulture, Margot Robbie is coming to television. But this time, the actress will be working behind the camera: Robbie will be producing a Shakespearean series for television featuring all-female leads with her own production company, LuckyChap.
The series will be comprised of ten stand-alone episodes, all based on Shakespeare plays told from the female perspective. The episodes will take place in the modern day.
LuckyChap released statement on their upcoming project. “We are thrilled about this Australian partnership as an opportunity to showcase unique, distinctly female voices in writing, and to demonstrate the high quality of the Australian film and television industry,” the statement read. “The project will share diverse points of view, from writers representing the different cultures and areas within Australia, which many would not readily associate with works of Shakespeare.”
Calling the series “incredibly original” with a “bold approach”, the CEO of Hoodlum, another production company involved in the project, claimed that Robbie’s series “will bring together leading and emerging female voices in Australian screen to re-imagine Shakespeare in a modern context.”
The untitled series marks Robbie’s first return to television since her role as Laura Cameron in ABC’s 1960s period drama series Pan Am. Robbie will work with Giula Sandler (writer of Australian shows like Nowhere Boys, Glitch, and Devil’s Playground) on the series.
