After appearing as Lauren Graham’s daughter, Amber, on NBC’s Parenthood for six seasons, Mae Whitman is reuniting with her onscreen mother on Netflix’s reboot of Gilmore Girls. According to Entertainment Weekly, Whitman will make a cameo appearance in the reboot of the popular show from The WB, though no other details about her appearance have been released.
Last summer, while the cast of Gilmore Girls reunited at the ATX festival in Austin, Whitman posted two photos of herself with Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory Gilmore and is Graham’s onscreen daughter in Gilmore Girls, joking that the two didn’t like each other and were feuding over Graham before posting a photo of the two of them together.
For six seasons, Whitman played Amber Holt, the troubled older daughter of Sarah Braverman (Graham), on Parenthood. Throughout her run on the show, Whitman’s character matured and had a baby in the penultimate episode of the show and named him Zeek in honor of her grandfather. In a flashforward in the last minutes of the show, she was shown to be in a relationship with someone else, who was portrayed by Scott Porter, who played Jason Street on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, which was also produced by Jason Katims.
After rumors started swirling in October that Gilmore Girls would be rebooted on the streaming giant, it was officially confirmed on Jan. 29, 2016 that the show would be coming back with Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel reprising their roles and Amy Sherman-Palladino would be returning to the show as well.
However, fans of Gilmore Girls and all things Stars Hollow related can’t have it all. On March 17, Melissa McCarthy, who played Lorelai’s best friend and business partner, confirmed she wouldn’t be returning to the show.
The other notable absence will be Edward Herrmann, who passed away at the end of 2015. Herrmann played Gilmore family patriarch Richard Gilmore and the cast has said that his presence is missed throughout the set.
The Gilmore Girls reboot, which is set to air sometime later in 2016, will be told in four 90 minute installments and are set to take place during each of the seasons, which means viewers will be treated to autumn and winter in Stars Hallow once again. The reboot is set to take place eight years after the events of the finale.
Gilmore Girls ran for seven seasons on The WB and The CW networks, from 2000 until 2007. The show was noted for its fast-paced dialogue and its realistic portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship.
