Lizzy Caplan Cast in ‘Das Boot’ Television Series

Variety recently reported that Lizzy Caplan (known for her roles on Masters of Sex and True Blood) will join German actor Rick Okon (Tatrot, Romeos) and August Wittgenstein (The Crown) in the sequel television series to the iconic German film Das Boot. Shooting for the series is set to begin in late August. The series will depict World War II submarine warfare from the German perspective and follow a German U-boat crew captained by Rick Okon’s character. The show will also include storylines set on land and even involve the French Resistance.

The 1981 film Das Boot is a classic German film written and directed by Wolfgang Peterson and is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s novel of the same name. Peterson’s lengthy war epic follows the story of a German U-boat crew as they navigate World War II on the seas. Das Boot is widely considered to be one of the most successful war films ever made, known for its rampant tension and realistic depiction of submarine warfare.

The television sequel was announced last year, but no new details have been released until this week with the news of Caplan’s casting. The series will pick up where the classic film left off and Andreas Prochaska (writer and director of The Dark Valley) will direct all of the episodes. So far the series is set to air in Europe on Sky TV in 2018, and while no American network has claimed the series just yet, the show’s famously successful source material and Caplan’s casting news no doubt makes it an enticing addition for networks.
