Lifetime Premieres New Series ‘Devious Maids’

On Sunday night, Lifetime premiered its new original series Devious Maids.

The show, created by Desperate Housewives’ Marc Cherry, averaged two million viewers during its kick off, as noted by the Hollywood Reporter. Of these viewers, 865,000 adults fell into the adults 25-54 range and 826,000 from adults 18-49. Devious Maids fell short of Lifetime’s other dramas the Client List and Army Wives, both of which premiered new seasons earlier this year with an average of 2.2 million viewers.

Devious Maids was originally developed as a pilot for ABC, but Lifetime ordered a thirteen-episode season from the creator last summer.

The show takes place in southern California and follows the lives of five Latina maids. Stars include Ugly Betty‘s Ana Ortiz, Entourage‘s Dania Ramírez, Scrubs’ Judy Reyes, Without a Trace‘s Roselyn Sánchez and Eva Longoria as one of the executive producers.

Last night’s series premiere begins with the murder of maid Flora (Paula Garcés), who was having an affair with her employer Adrian Powell (Tom Irwin). Powell’s wife Evelyn (Rebecca Wisocky) confronts the maid of the affair during a party at the Powell residence. Flora’s dramatic stabbing leads to her death, but not before she has a chance to write a letter to Adrian, expressing her anger over his claim of seduction. In the letter, which isn’t discovered in the episode, Flora writes she did not seduce her boss but rather, he raped her.

Next, maid Marisol (Ana Oritz) gets a job at the Stappord house. Mrs. Stappord (Brianna Brown) is immediately suspicious of Marisol because of her lack of accent, and as the episode continues, we learn that this suspicion is not for nothing.

The audience then sees the rest of the maids at work; Zoila (Judy Reyes) and her daughter Valentina (Edy Ganem) work for the glamorous train wreck Genevieve Delatour (Susan Lucci), whose son Remi (Drew Van Acker) moves back home after his mother’s mental breakdown over being dumped. Zolia disproves of her daughter’s crush on Remi, but Valentina doesn’t let up on her plans to seduce her employer’s son.

Meanwhile, Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez) works for Alejandro Rubio, a famous musical artist. Carmen wants him to listen to her demo CD, but must tiptoe around Rubio’s other help.

Rosie (Dania Ramirez) works for the Westmores (Grant Show and Mariana Klaveno), an actor couple with a baby son. Rosie, a mother herself, basically mothers the couple’s baby, all while struggling to bring her son to the States.

Zoila, Rosie, Valentina and Carmen are gossiping in a park when they meet Marisol, who asks them about Flora’s murder. The audience then sees Flora standing up for Mrs. Stappord in a battle against the ex-Mrs. Stappord, securing her spot as the Stappord’s devious maid.

The episode ends with Carmen visiting her son in jail, who appeared earlier in this episode as the guy who supposedly stabbed Flora. The show does not give much up about Carmen, but clearly there is something off about her maid occupation.

Devious Maids shows potential in becoming a summer guilty pleasure. New episodes air Sunday nights on Lifetime.
